2) In line with the policy of the European Commission and with support from the EFTA Secretariat, CENELEC aims to prepare a single set of voluntary electrotechnical standards for Europe in order to support the achievement of the free market for goods and services inside Europe.
The standards, produced by common agreement (consensus) between the CENELEC member National Committees, constitute an important means of establishing the state of the art for all essential characteristics and related test procedures. Through its harmonisation work, CENELEC also aims to remove differences of technical nature, either between the national standards of its members, or between the use of CENELEC standards at national level to assess conformity, that could give rise to new technical barriers to trade.
European Standards are also prepared in response to specific requests from the European Commission and EFTA. Where necessary and appropriate, the standards are prepared in collaboration with the sister organisaton European Committee for Standardization (CEN), or with the European Telecommunication Standards Institute (ETSI).
Contributions from other bodies may also be appropriate.
The use of the European standards for the certification of products is also considered. A large number of co-operating partners (Federations of European industry) give active support of the work of CENELEC by indicating priorities and by preparing draft specifications.

3) Im Einklang mit der Politik der Europäischen Kommission und mit Unterstützung durch das EFTA Sekretariat verfolgt CENELEC das Ziel, einen einheitlichen Bestand von freiwilligen elektrotechnischen Normen für Europa zu erarbeiten und so die Vollendung des freien Marktes für Waren und Dienstleistungen zu unterstützen.
Die Normen werden nach gemeinsamer Vereinbarung von den CENELEC Mitgliedern und ihren Nationalen Komitees im Konsens erstellt. Normen sind ein wichtiges Mittel für die Erreichung des neuesten Standes der Technik bezüglich aller wesentlichen Merkmale und den damit verbundenen Prüfverfahren.
Im Zuge der Harmonisierung der Normen versucht CENELEC, auch technische Unterschiede zu beseitigen, die technisch begründeten Handelsbarrieren Vorschub leisten könnten. Solche Unterschiede bestehen zwischen den nationalen Normen der Mitgliedsländer, oder betreffen die Anwendung von CENELEC-Normen für die Konformitätsbeurteilung.
Europäische Normen werden auch auf Wunsch der Europäischen Kommission und der EFTA nach spezifischen Vorgaben erstellt. In bestimmten geeigneten Fällen werden die Normen in Zusammenarbeit mit der Schwesterorganisation Europäisches Komitee für Normung (CEN) oder dem Europäischen Normungsinstitut für Telekommunikation (ETSI) ausgearbeitet. Ebenso werden angemessene Beiträge von anderen Organisationen berücksichtigt.
Auch die Nutzung von Europäischen Normen für die Produktzertifizierung wird in Betracht gezogen. Eine große Zahl von Kooperationspartnern (europäische Industrieverbände) unterstützt CENELEC bei der Arbeit durch Hinweise auf vorrangigen Normungsbdarf und mit eigenen Entwürfen von Spezifikationen.

2) The bodies of CENELEC are : the General Assembly, the Administrative Board, the Technical Board (which controls the technical committees and sub-committees, as well as the working groups and task forces), the CCAF (CENELEC Conformity Assessment Forum) and the Central Secretariat.
